Minor quibble: one of them took enough levels in ranger to get an animal companion
I would generally argue that Altivo is a player character (probably a druid) but Animal Friendship is a lvl 1 bard spell. Miquel might have just rolled really well.
Or the horse is actually a player character too
I mean I did have a DND game where a player was polymorphed into a lizard permanently and they took four sessions to realize he was their missing paladin.
So. The horde is actually their warrior/paladin and they just never realized he has been polymorphed.
Their campaign is a series of Nat 1’s and 20’s
